Zeus, the supreme god of the Olympians, and Hera, the goddess of marriage, had a son, Hephaestus, who in some accounts was thought to have been born from Hera alone. And from birth to trapping Hera in a mystic thrown Hephaestus has been exiled and has returned to Mount Olympus all in one lifetime.
Inside the volcano Aetna, Hephaestus, the lame god, did much blacksmithing.
Because of great anger from the rejection of his mother, Hephaestus forged a grand throne that he gave to Hera as a present. Once she sat upon it she was trapped.
Because Hephaestus was ugly, the goddess Athena refused his hand in marriage.
As the gods needed some kind of gift to give to Hephaestus so that he would release Hera, they gave him Aphrodite's hand in marriage.
Aphrodite's was married to Hephaestus only 'in name' she did not care much for him. And so Aphrodite had many suitors one of them being Ares.
Pandora, the first woman, was made of out of clay by Hephaestus and sent to Earth by Zeus to wreak vengeance on Prometheus for stealing the fire from the sky.
Even though Hephaestus was a god he was still a workingman and for that the Greeks held him high in their religion.
Afraid of being overthrown, Zeus ate his lover Metis in order to birth Athena himself. But because Zeus was male and could not give birth he had Hephaestus cut his head open with an axe so that Athena could be born.
With Hephaestus's amazing forging powers he created many of Zeus's thunderbolt, based off of the design of the Cyclopes that was fashioned in the Titan War, and his scepter which he made in his forge that is located inside the volcano Aetna.
